Vegetable thistle treatment

The use of vegetable thistle for fabric processing in Pray, in the province of Biella

Gar.Fin.Tex is specialised in the processing of noble fabrics, leaders in the municipality of Pray and throughout the province of Biella. The production process consists of delicate and artesanal treatments using Spanish thistles of plant origin which the company receives after careful selection according to the required dimensions. Then the preparation of the blades is done manually by inserting the thistles one by one: this is a fundamental step to add further value to the refinement of the fabric.

Vegetable thistle

The Biella team manually inserts thistles in the appropriate supports, called irons, to obtain a compact structure. They are placed in parallel and orientated in the same direction. The iron is subsequently fixed on the circumference of the drum or barrel, creating a cylinder of about 60-70 cm in diameter covered with more than a dozen irons with all the thistles arranged in the same direction. The treatment has 2 barrels that rotate pile and counter-pile: the fabric, usually worked wet, is guided by several cylinders until it touches the two barrels. By means of specific controls, the operator regulates the 'contact', that is the tension that the fabric is forced to undergo tangentially on the barrels. The result is uniform hair extraction over the entire surface of the fabric.
